Marlene Dietrich -- whether you refer to her by her first name or her last, everyone knows who you are talking about. The name evokes the quintessence of feminine enchantment; her picture remains the 20th Century's great icon of cosmopolitan glamour and elegant sexual allure. She remains as a cultural symbol of the century and an emblem of assertiveness. While immensely sensual, Dietrich's persona was also strangely androgynous; her fondness for masculine attire -- not only spawned a fashion craze, it also created an added dimension of sexual ambiguity which served to make her even more magnetic.

LicenseBox Signs Ida Lupino for Ida Lupino: Mother Directs to Museum of Modern Art publication.

Ida Lupino described herself as 'the poor man's Bette Davis.' She became known for her hard-boiled roles, and appeared in such films as They Drive by Night (1940) and High Sierra (1941), both opposite Humphrey Bogart. She acted regularly and was in high demand throughout the 1940s. Throughout the '40s and '50s, women directors were virtually unheard of in Hollywood. Ida Lupino was the exception. In the late '40s, she searched for greater creative control and formed a production company, The Filmakers, with her then husband Collier Young. They shot their films on location with small budgets, often tackling subjects that Hollywood rarely dared touch, such as unwed motherhood and bigamy.
